Scheduled On-Site Professional Development
Workshops and Classes


Designed for classroom teachers, librarians, art teachers, and others interested in engaging students in the visual arts and the art of the book, the Museum’s professional development programs emphasize teaching through the arts and encourage critical and creative thinking.

Fees for the following workshops include Museum Admission and a 10% discount in the Museum Shop (Members 25%) on the day of the program. Registration is required.

In The Art Studio
Introduction to Linocut Printmaking

Teen / Adult Workshop (Ages 15 and up)
No fancy studio space needed! We’ll play with multiple printing techniques to incorporate into your collages, books, and homemade gifts. Enjoy a private viewing of Antonio Frasconi and Eric Carle’s wood block prints in the galleries. Bring home a portfolio of color prints made by yourself and your classmates exchanged at the end of the workshop.

Professional Development Workshop
An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies
April 30, 2010

$50 (Members $45)
(4 PDPs) Learn about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), the principles of which guide the educational programming at the Museum. Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine. Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.

In The Art Studio
Making Art with Young Children

(4 PDPs) This Studio session will focus on strategies and ideas for engaging young children with materials. Taking cues from the Visual Thinking Strategies and the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, our work with materials will provide a model for helping young children explore and learn from materials while highlighting the importance of the role of observation and facilitation by adults. This process-centered rather than product-centered approach encourages critical thinking, self-expression, and creativity.

Professional Development Workshop
The Whole Book Approach
June 18, 2010

(4 PDPs) Discover the difference between reading with children and reading to children. This session will begin with a chance for participants to observe a storytime at The Carle to see the Whole Book Approach in action. Participants will then discuss their observations and learn how to evaluate the picture book as an art form and to use this critical engagement as a platform for leading interactive picture book reading experiences with their students.

Professional Development Workshop
Using Picture Books with Older Students

(4 PDPs) Picture books can be used to help differentiate instruction and make learning more fun and interactive for students of all ages. This workshop will provide strategies for integrating picture books in upper elementary curricula. A group exploration using the best and newest picture books will introduce participants to new ideas for presenting subject matter, ways to simplify literary elements, and help students with their writing process. This workshop is designed for participants to share and gain new ideas through conversation and exploration together.

Landscapes of Literacy: From Library to Studio
in the Early Childhood Centers of Pistoia, Italy

August 8 - August 9, 2010

(10 PDPs) With an emphasis on the quality of space and its potential to promote meaningful relations and exchanges between adults and children, this year’s institute will focus on the library and studio. Drawing on the children’s interests, their home-life, and the traditions of the city, these programs are designed to provide the opportunity for aesthetic experiences and cognitive and social development.

Presentations will underscore the importance of creating literacy-rich environments that stimulate the child’s imagination, support their sense of individuality and community, and encourage research and meaning-making. Participants will engage in direct experiences to explore concretely these two environments, the library and the studio.

Join us for a unique opportunity to visit and study the early childhood centers of the city of Pistoia, Italy.

Learn about Pistoia’s internationally-renowned early childhood education. Together we will:

  • Visit the infant-toddler centers and preschools
  • Observe and engage in conversation with educators and administrators about their attention to environments and
    their strategies of observation and documentation
  • Learn about their commitment to families, culture, and history with the intent of creating a strong community of learners
  • Enjoy the company of fellow educators and the city
