Workshops and Classes
Designed for classroom teachers, librarians, art teachers, and others interested in engaging students in the visual arts and the art of the book, the Museum’s professional development programs emphasize teaching through the arts and encourage critical and creative thinking.
Fees for the following workshops include Museum Admission and a 10% discount in the Museum Shop (Members 25%) on the day of the program. Registration is required.

A Book in Hand: Leading Multiple Copy Storytimes with Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers

(3 PDPs) Learn about The Carle’s newest storytime model grounded in The Whole Book Approach, and how using multiple copies of a single picture book during storytime programs and classroom circle-times can benefit babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults alike. Explore the picture book as a visual art form and a physical object and examine connections between verbal and visual literacy through this innovative approach to looking, listening, learning and communicating.

In The Art Studio
A Space to Create

(4 PDPs) Create a mini art space in your home or classroom designed to support development and creativity. This workshop for teachers and parents of toddlers through elementary-aged students, explores the components of a vibrant art space, offers tips and resources for creating one, and explores the underlying principles and philosophies that guide the Museum’s Art Studio program. Since no trip to the Art Studio would be complete without time to make art, we’ll also explore some of our favorite materials.

Handmade Cards and Books

(4 PDPs) With the holidays just around the corner, learn how to create handmade cards and unique books for those friends and family on your gift list. We will cover our favorite bookmaking techniques for teachers, librarians and parents to adapt to your classroom, library or home. Bring a brown bag lunch so we can maximize our work time. You will go home with a collection of small handmade books and the techniques to create them again and again.

Picturing Stories

(4 PDPs) This workshop centers on the book of award-winning illustrator, Molly Bang, Picture This: How Pictures Work. Participants will be introduced to Bang’s core visual literacy principles, use The Carle’s exhibitions to explore approaches to “reading pictures”, and apply this information to create a visual story using cut-paper collage.

Join us for a unique opportunity to visit and study the early childhood centers of the city of Pistoia, Italy.
Learn about Pistoia’s internationally-renowned early childhood education. Together we will:
- Visit the infant-toddler centers and preschools
- Observe and engage in conversation with educators and administrators about their attention to environments and
their strategies of observation and documentation - Learn about their commitment to families, culture, and history with the intent of creating a strong community of learners
- Enjoy the company of fellow educators and the city
