Art Studio Outreach Programs for Students

With a commitment to education through art, our goal is to foster creative and intellectual development through making art. Our programs engage students with materials in ways designed to nurture imagination and further develop creative and critical thinking. In addition to drawing upon the Museum's exhibitions, Visual Thinking Strategies, and the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education, these activities also support the National and Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks for art education. Prices include a $25 Materials Fee. All programs are for a minimum of 8 and maximum of 25 (or one classroom).

To arrange for your group's outreach program please contact the Education Department at programs@carlemuseum.org or 413.658.1106.

Art-Studio-to-Go
Ages 3 and up
$100 per 45-minute session (Ages 3 - 4)
$150 per 75-minute session (Ages 5 and up)

This program can be a pre- or post-extension of your group's guided visit or serve as a "Museum-to-Go" experience for those unable to visit the Museum. After a brief presentation drawing upon art currently on exhibit at The Carle, students will engage in art-making using materials featured in the Museum's current Art Studio program.

Bookmaking Basics
Ages 5 and up
$150 per 75-minute session (Ages 5 and up)

The Studio’s approach to bookmaking centers on the idea that books can be a vehicle for imagining creative and innovative ways to communicate ideas. In this multi-sensory program, students will learn fundamental bookmaking vocabulary and techniques, focusing on one artist book structure per session. Arrays of interesting materials are provided to adapt the structure to best fit their ideas.

"Thank you for teaching us about art. We had fun making our own books. We are happy that you came here." – a first grader

I Am an Artist
Ages 5 and up
$150 per 75-minute session

This program engages participants in thinking about what it means to be an artist. Using Eric Carle's work as inspiration, the group will explore process, materials, and the often-asked question, "Where do ideas come from?" An optional multiple-visit program allows for a deeper exploration of Eric Carle's process and more time for students to explore their own ideas.

"The facilitator’s organization of materials and types of materials she used were great. I will be using some of her ideas." – Kindergarten teacher, Sherborn MA

Possibilities in Print
Ages 9 and up
$150 per 75-minute session

Picture books are collections of prints, or reproductions of original artworks, bound in sequential form. In this hands-on program, students will learn how picture books are produced, experiment with the tools and techniques of printmaking, and imagine, reproduce and share their own stories and ideas. Multiple-session bookings provide the opportunity to explore multiple printmaking methods.

Ages 3 and up
$100 per 45-minute session Ages (3 - 4)
$150 per 75-minute session (Ages 5 and up)

This hands-on, minds-on program encourages imagination, collaboration and critical thinking. Presented with a thoughtful selection of "everyday stuff" students will be encouraged to explore the potential of found objects to be reused and reinvented.
