My Biggest Writing/Illustrating Challenge and How I Solved It

Panelists: Elise Broach, Lita Judge, Grace Lin, Sara Pennypacker
The New England Society for Children’s Books Writers and Illustration will present this panel discussion exploring the process and challenges of writing poetry and fiction. The “BIG READ for Young Readers” event this year looks at the process as it relates to children’s books.
Listen in as four veteran authors and author-illustrators discuss how they struggled with and overcame challenges as they created the children’s books we know and love. Their stories will inform and inspire writers, writing teachers, and children’s book enthusiasts. Book sale and signing to follow.
Elise Broach is the author of six picture books and three novels. Both When Dinosaurs Came with Everything and Masterpiece won the E. B. White Read Aloud Award.
Lita Judge combines her love of history and nature to write and illustrate children’s books. Her first picture book, One Thousand Tracings, won the 2008 IRA Children's Book Award and was a Jane Addams Award Honoree.
Grace Lin is the author/illustrator of more than a dozen picture books. Also an author of middle grade fiction, Grace’s most recent novel Where the Mountain Meets the Moon was the 2009 Parents’ Choice Gold Winner.
Sara Pennypacker is the author of the New York Times Best-Selling Clementine series, two other chapter book series, and two picture books, one of which won the 2007 Golden Kite Award.
This is also a "Big Read" event, in collaboration with the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and Memorial Hall Museum's 2010 BIG READ: "Old School." Free Reader's Guides and bookmarks will be available. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest."

This show features art work of the children from our audience. Arrive early, paint a picture and see it used in the production. Be prepared to join right in. There's lots of audience participation, even for the adults. Conceived and directed by Tom McCabe.
After purchasing tickets, the first 20 children who sign up may come to the art studio between 10:00 and 11:30 to create an image for use in the show and temporary display in the Auditorium Hall.

4:30-5:30: Roundtable: On Poetry & The Visual Arts: Jen Bervin, Terrance Hayes, & Matthea Harvey, moderated by Jane Curley.
This event is part of the 10th Annual Juniper Literary Festival, April 23-24, celebrating 10 years of jubilat, the acclaimed international literary journal.

Kelsey Flynn IS Mother Goose. Join her and her merry minstrels as we sing, rhyme and even dance our way through these beloved tales, songs and poems. We'll meet Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet and, if she can get some time away from all of those kids, The Little Old Lady Who Lives in a Shoe.
This show features art work of the children from our audience. Arrive early, paint a picture and see it used in the production. Be prepared to join right in. There's lots of audience participation, even for the adults. Conceived and directed by Tom McCabe.
After purchasing tickets, the first 20 children who sign up may come to the art studio between 10:00 and 11:30 to create an image for use in the show and temporary display in the Auditorium Hall.

An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies

(4 PDPs) Learn about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), the principles of which guide the educational programming at the Museum. Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine. Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.

A day filled with artist/author presentations, book-signings, hands-on activities in the Art Studio and music by Putumayo World Music recording artist José Gonzalez and Banda Criolla. Enjoy dog demonstrations and meet some favorite canine costumed characters. Picnic with us on the terrace, outdoor grilling and Mapleline ice cream (cash only).
Complimenting the art in the galleries will be an exhibit of original art by some of New England’s favorite illustrators as well as an art sale and raffle. Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society and Canine Companions will be available to answer your pooch-related questions.
Stuffed animal dogs are welcome but please leave your real dogs at home. Come meet other dog lovers, eat a hot dog, and join in the fun!

(10 PDPs) With an emphasis on the quality of space and its potential to promote meaningful relations and exchanges between adults and children, this year’s institute will focus on the library and studio. Drawing on the children’s interests, their home-life, and the traditions of the city, these programs are designed to provide the opportunity for aesthetic experiences and cognitive and social development.
Presentations will underscore the importance of creating literacy-rich environments that stimulate the child’s imagination, support their sense of individuality and community, and encourage research and meaning-making. Participants will engage in direct experiences to explore concretely these two environments, the library and the studio.

The town of Hamelin has a rat problem, and there is only one man who can help. Join puppeteers John and Megan Regan of CactusHead Puppets as they present a slightly silly, puppet-filled adaptation of this fairy tale classic.

Eric Carle will return to The Museum for a presentation about his life and work in this one-of-a-kind fundraiser. He will adapt a speech he recently delivered at Harvard University for our Museum audience.
A champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception with Eric and his wife Barbara will follow the presentation.
Please note Eric will not be signing books this evening.

A limited number of tickets will be distributed the day of the event. No tickets are available in advance.
Please join us for this special day! Our neighbor Atkins Country Market is providing complimentary award-winning cider donuts and cider while supplies last. Atkins will also be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers in our orchard. Mapleline Farms ice cream truck will be here too!
Museum Members may enter from 9:00 to 9:45 am. General Public and Museum Members arriving after 9:45 am will be allowed entry at 10:00 am on a space available basis.
Signing guidelines:
- Limit 1 book from home and 2 books from the Museum Shop* per ticket holder
- No personalization
- Eric will be signing books only
- No flash photography allowed
While supplies last, receive a specially-designed Eric Carle bookplate with each Eric Carle hardcover book purchased that day in the Museum Shop (above the 3-book-per-person limit). We thank you in advance for your cooperation and look forward to seeing you at The Carle!

Learn about The Carle’s newest storytime model grounded in The Whole Book Approach, and how using multiple copies of a single picture book during storytime programs and classroom circle-times can benefit babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults alike. Explore the picture book as a visual art form and a physical object and examine connections between verbal and visual literacy through this innovative approach to looking, listening, learning, and communicating. Animals, Art and the Imagination (Session I)

Ages 6-10 (Class size 8-12)
Coordinated by Art Educators, Meghan Burch and Diana MacKenzie, this program includes time in The Museum’s Galleries, Reading Library, and Art Studio. After lunch, participants head down to the Hampshire College Farm Center. While Museum Educators plan a variety of activities, each day Farm Education Collaborative staff introduces our students to various farm animals and helps the students experience the animals’ significance in our everyday lives. Also offered August 23 - 26.

Based on the classic book by Esphyr Slobodkina, this simple folk tale of a hat seller whose inventory of hats is lost to mischievous monkeys while he is napping is told around the world in every culture that has monkeys. The PuppeTree tells this exciting story through the eyes of 7 different cultures, using an engaging variety of puppetry styles to celebrate diversity.
