Alice & Dorothy: Parallels and Perpendiculars with Barry Moser

In conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition, The Wonderful Art of Oz, this lecture by Barry Moser will chronicle the development of his designs and illustrations for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He will also focus attention on the theme of the voyage solitaire, the political implications he reads in the text, and the parallels he draws between Baum’s Dorothy and Carroll’s Alice.

In an effort to make this very popular series, formerly known as Bagels and Books Series, more accessible we have made it free with Museum Admission. Please feel free to come at noon and purchase a bite to eat in the café before attending the illustrator’s presentation at 12:30. A book signing will follow the presentation. Those who attend will continue to receive a 10% discount in the Museum Shop (Members 20%) on the days of the sessions. This series is recommended for adults and for children of kindergarten age and older. (1 PDP)

We invite you to come dressed as your favorite picture book character and be treated to a special Halloween storytime and a Museum scavenger hunt filled with treats and treasures.

First Fridays @ The Carle

"...Happy Hour for the whole family." (Amherst Bulletin)
Taking a cue from the Museum's popular Member PJ parties, which have been cited by families as the perfect bedtime transition for little ones, First Fridays @ The Carle invites all visitors to head to the Museum after school/work, grab a quick and casual bite to eat (pizza!) in the Museum's Café, enjoy a Storytime in the Reading Library, drop by the Galleries, take in a short film in the Auditorium, and create a masterpiece in the Art Studio . . . all before bedtime!

The program runs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on the first Friday of each month.

A love of words and a love of color (especially red) have led to many fine children’s books by this award-winning illustrator. Sweet’s style is one of whimsical watercolors often enhanced by collage art. Hear her thoughts on design, research, and experimentation – what she considers most exciting about making children’s books.
