Alice & Dorothy: Parallels and Perpendiculars

In conjunction with the exhibition, Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children’s Books, Barry Moser will chronicle the development of his designs and illustrations for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and focus on the theme of the voyage solitaire, the political implications he reads in the text, and the parallels and perpendiculars he draws between Baum’s Dorothy and Carroll’s Alice. Book signing to follow.

Noodle Doodle Box is the story of Pepper and Zacharis, two silly box-dwelling friends, who have a fantastic time playing and learning together even though they sometimes fight. One day their friendship is tested by a bullying Drum Major and they must decide what's most important them. (Most appreciated and enjoyed by families and children ages five and up.)

Virginia Lee Burton: A Sense of Place

A documentary film that explores the life and art of Virginia Lee Burton. Considered to be a “Renaissance woman,” Burton was an innovative children’s book author/illustrator, a visionary textile designer who also painted and sculpted in granite, marble and wood. Nick Clark, chief curator of The Carle, began working with Lipson on a project she created about the placement of cats within picture books with no apparent connection to the narrative. She called it The Silent Cat. The show of picture books was in progress, but unfortunately Eden passed away before the project was realized. Enjoy Studio activities created by our friends at Pearson, see the original art Eric Carle created for his much-loved book, enjoy The Very Hungry Caterpillar film in the Auditorium, and best of all, join special guests as they read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. There will be visits from the Caterpillar and free pizza and cake, as well!

Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine. Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.
