The Hampshire Young People’s Chorus will present two kid-friendly concerts – Junior Choir at 2:00pm,
Concert Choir at 3:30pm.

The Young People’s Chorus is an award-winning community children’s choir based in Amherst. They have performed widely, including WGBY’s Together In Song program, numerous children’s choir festivals, and appearances with Pioneer Valley Symphony, the Smith and Amherst College Orchestras and Amherst Ballet. The choir’s roster currently includes over 100 singers ages 5-14 in three age divisions.

From his first painting in college on the subject of the Negro Baseball League to the publication of his book, We Are The Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, Kadir Nelson has been inspired by the history of the league and the strong heroic people who were a part of it. Join him as he shares some stories, talks about his process, and highlights aspects of this extraordinary exhibition.

Please note date change: There is no performance on Monday, February 20, but the Museum is open! A fun and energetic re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved tale The Ugly Duckling. Our hero Eugene is "different" from his siblings, marching to his own beat and excited about who and what he is. When confronted that he is "ugly" and doesn't fit in, Eugene sets out to find his place in the world and finds acceptance and love and learns forgiveness. Great for the entire family! Written by Boston's own Jack Neary and directed by Irene Thornton

Professional Development Workshop
An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies

(4 PDPs) Learn about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), the principles of which guide the educational programming at the Museum. Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine. Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.

Using Picture Books with Older Students

This workshop will provide strategies for integrating picture books in upper elementary curricula. 2012 Children’s Book Festival: Baseball Bonanza!

Join a host of authors and artists who have created some of your favorite baseball picture books for our 7th annual Children’s Book Festival in conjunction with the exhibition We Are The Ship: The History of Negro League Baseball, original paintings by award-winning artist Kadir Nelson.

The Museum will host members of the Negro League Baseball Players Association for a special program in the Auditorium. In addition, this event for art-, book-, and baseball-lovers of all ages will feature art activities, artist and author presentations and demonstrations, and book signings. Enjoy ballpark fare or bring your own picnic to enjoy in our apple orchard.
