Emily Dickinson lived all her life among family and friends in the small college town of Amherst, Massachusetts. When she died in 1886, she left over 1,700 poems; hundreds of them were found in a single locked box by her sister Lavinia. In them she envisioned worlds far beyond the apparent simplicity of her daily life.
