Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins

By Eric Kimmel
Illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman

It is the first night of Hanukkah. Hershel of Ostropol is walking down the road. Tired and hungry, he is looking forward to reaching the next village. He is sure that bright candles, merry song, and platters of potato latkes will be waiting for him. But when he reaches the village, Hershel discovers that the villagers aren't celebrating Hanukkah. They're too scared of the goblins that haunt the old synagogue at the top of the hill. Hershel wants to help the village people. "If I can't outwit a few goblins," Hershel tells the rabbi, "then my name isn't Hershel of Ostropol." Hershel comes up with several ingenious ideas for tricking the goblins in this original Hanukkah tale.

The Best Hanukkah Ever

By Barbara Diamond Goldin
Illustrated by Avi Katz

Was $16.99, now $10!
The Knoodle family is about to celebrate Hanukkah. They discuss what the rabbi has told them: "It is hard to give the perfect gift, one that will be treasured forever." What did the rabbi mean? Thinking they should give one another a gift they'd really love to have themselves, they pick names from a hat. Bubby Sadie gives Little Yekl a pickle barrel. Mama Pearl gives Papa Jack a straw hat with yellow daisies - something she has wanted her whole life! And so it goes. No one is happy...until the little rabbi arrives and, with Little Yekl's help, straightens things out. Then they all celebrate "the best Hanukkah ever!"

Chanukah Lights

Chanukah Lights

By Michael Rosen
Illustrated by Robert Sabuda

Two thousand years after a single lamp burned eight days in the Temple where Jewish freedom first was fought, acclaimed author Michael J. Rosen and master pop-up artist Robert Sabuda imagine eight scenes that, like the flame of the shamash candle, illuminate places and times where Jews have celebrated this miracle: a desert encampment, the hold of a refugee ship, the first Jewish settlement in the New World, a kibbutz, and a spectacular final scene in which city skyscrapers become menorahs that call upon the stars to be their flames. In each window into history, the Chanukah lights reflect freedom's promise, hope rekindled amid oppression, and the unflagging faith mirroed in the eyes of all who gather for this Festival of Lights.
