Illustrated by Eric Carle Very unusual item. Silver metallic book-cover features tipped-in original multi-colored crayon drawing of caterpillar holding a flag that reads "25". Drawing is signed "Eric Carle 1994" in blue ink. Entire book is packaged in heavy plexiglass display case. Plexiglass case is itself inside of fancy cardboard presentation box. Front of cardboard box reads: "The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 25th Anniversary. Limited Edition. 1969-1994. Philomel Books - New York.
Special text on interior, in Eric Carle's script, reads:
"Dear Friends, 25 years ago a tiny caterpillar popped out of a little egg, and pretty soon you took him into your hearts. Since then children all over the world have been turning the pages of this book, allowing the caterpillar to turn into a beautiful butterfly year after year after year. For that the caterpillar and I say Thank you, Eric Carle"
A card inside the front cover reads: "This is an original drawing by Eric Carle done in crayon and blue ink. Handle with care. Eric Carle
There were 500 of these books produced in 1994, and additionally, 50 artist's proof copies. This is one of the artist's proofs. Since original Eric Carle drawings are very hard to come by, the original crayon drawing on the front cover renders this book quite valuable.
