| Picturing the World: The Art of Alice and Martin Provensen By Nancy Willard Illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen "The Well-Tempered Book" by Nancy Willard. Catalog Design by Rita Marshall. 23 Illustrations, Paper, 32 pages. 1,000 copies, First Edition.
From "Acknowledgments" by H. Nichols B. Clark. "We are delighted to present the exhibition, Picturing the World: The Art of Alice and Martin Provensen, and we recognize that much of what is on view constitutes a seamless collaboration between Alice and her late husband Martin. During a project, they passed works back and forth, so that their hands are virtually inseparable. Since Martin's death in 1987, Alice has continued to create wonderful books. They cover a broad spectrum of subject matter, crossing time and space. Her independent books retain the affinity for a flow and sequence of image both she and Martin learned in the animation studios during the 1940s. Of equal importance, their books forged an ongoing passion for untutored naive art - from Edward Hicks to Douanier Rousseau - that reflect the simple, rural life the Provensens embraced in the 1950s."

| A Visit to William Blake's Inn By Nancy Willard Illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen Inspired by William Blake's work, Nancy Willard has written a book of magical poems about life at an imaginary inn, run by none other than William Blake himself. The inn is staffed by two mighty dragons that brew and bake, two angels that wash and shake featherbeds, and a rabbit who shows visitors to their rooms. Among the remarkable guests are the Man in the Marmalade Hat, the King of Cats who writes his wife not to "grow fat like a common kitchen cat," and two sunflowers who demand a room with a view. The flawlessly crafted illustrations by Alice and Martin Provensen reflect their deep love for William Blake and the London in which he lived. Together, text and illustrations combine to create a once-in-a-lifetime book that will be cherished by readers of all ages. Winner of the Newbery Medal and a Caldecott Honor Book.
