Thunder at Gettysburg

By Patricia Lee Gauch
Illustrated by Stephen Gammell

What a great place to watch a war, Tillie thought as she dragged a chair to her attic window. There -- west of town -- were swarms of blue and gray soldiers melting toward Seminary Ridge. It was July 1, 1863. By late afternoon Tillie Pierce was far from home, caught in the midst of the thunder at Gettysburg.

With great feeling and a sense for the sweeping momentum of the battle at Gettysburg, Patricia Lee Gauch and Stephen Gammell convey the emotions and experiences of one person drawn unknowingly into the holocaust. The honesty and the intensity of text and drawings add profoundly to our understanding of the human dimensions of this tragic episode in American history.
