Guided Programs
The Museum strives to build a strong partnership with visiting groups through programming designed to meet their varying needs. Programs include a brief orientation followed by facilitated Gallery and Art Studio experiences designed to foster both visual and verbal literacy. Each segment of the program is between 30 and 40 minutes in length, depending on the age of the participants.
The goal is to allow participants to experience art both as an observer and a creator as well as to explore the books from which the art was taken. The Museum offers pre- and post-visit activities to provide a context for and extension of the museum experience.
Gallery Programs draw heavily upon The Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) developed by Abigail Housen and Philip Yenawine, and are designed to engage the viewer in the process of connecting with art. Through questions designed to stimulate careful looking, critical thinking, observation, and discussion, visitors are encouraged to make meaning of what they see.
Art Studio Programs invite exploration and discovery through hands-on investigation of art materials, techniques, and the work of illustrators featured in our galleries. They are designed to engage the participants' imaginations, foster creative and critical thinking, and support the Massachusetts Standards for Art Education.
