Getting Crafty: Eric Carle Baby Clothes

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

I just wanted to share with you these pictures sent to me from a customer in Australia. She bought some Eric Carle fabric and made the most adorable pinafores with matching ruffle pants for her granddaughters.

These are made using our Junk Food fabric, by individually cutting out the foods and appliqueing them onto the dress. The ruffles include a strip of the Junk Food fabric. I love the combination of the Eric Carle fabrics with the solid colors. So bright and cheery! Here is a similar dress made by cutting out the animals from the Brown Bear Animals fabric. Doesn’t this just inspire you to go make your own?

New Fabric! The Grouchy Ladybug Line

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

We’re so excited to show off a brand new line of Eric Carle fabric in our store! The Grouchy Ladybug fabric line! There are five new patterns to choose from. I think the Ladybug dots are my favorite. (I’m seriously considering make a ladybug skirt to wear to work!)

Here’s a link to a pattern to make your own Grouchy Ladybug quilt.

What would you make with Grouchy Ladybug fabric?

Fancy Stitching

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

As you may know, we sell gorgeous Eric Carle fabric in our store. We have over thirty different patterns, designs and colors all in well-made cotton fabric, perfect for quilting and other home sewing projects. One of my favorite parts of the job is having customers come back to show me what they have created with their fabric! It’s always so amazing to see the variety of beautiful projects that can be made with a little creativity and skill!

Here’s a lovely quilt made by member (and educator of Music Together, one of the classes offered here at The Carle for families), Heleen Cardinaux.

She combined the Brown Bear panel with the Brown Bear stripes (you may recognize those stripes from the endpapers of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You see?). You can see the backing was made with this lovely starry night fabric, which makes for an extremely cozy quilt for night time cuddles. Look closely for Heleen’s extra special touch. She stitched the outline of each of the animals so that it appears lightly on the starry backing as if it’s a constellation. Love it!

The Tiny Seed is…not so tiny

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

One of our very talented and crafty booksellers, Lillian, made this gorgeous (and giant!) flower wall hanging made from our Eric Carle fabric, inspired by our favorite springtime book, The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. We love it so much we’ve put it on display on our Shop wall!

It definitely brings a burst of cheery brightness to the store, even on rainy days.

Inspired to make your own? Lillian used these fabrics:

What else could you make with these beautiful fabrics?

Eric Carle Quilts are Sew Beautiful!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

After last week’s post on picture books about quilts, I started thinking about all the talented quilters who I’ve met at The Carle. Even since before we started selling fabric, we’ve had many creative crafters show their love of Eric Carle and literacy through fabric art. We proudly display two exceptional quilts in our building for the public to see.

Here is a quilt made for Eric Carle in celebration of The Family Reading Partnership’s Project First Book‘s 5th Anniversary. It features scenes from different favorite Eric Carle books. This quilt was pieced by Elsie Dentes, hand quilted by Mary Caver, and individual blocks were appliqued by members of the Tompkins County Quilter’s Guild. The photo doesn’t do it justice – even the dragonfly in the top right corner seems to sparkle!

The quilt now lives on the wall of our Reading Library for all to admire.

This quilt was presented to Eric Carle at the member’s opening of an Eric Carle exhibition at The Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, WA.

Now that we have Eric Carle fabric, we have seen customers make not only quilts, but bibs, aprons, pillows, and curtains, as well.  Here is a beautiful Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt made from the Eric Carle fabric. It was made as a baby shower gift for Meghan Burch in our art studio by one of her volunteers and very talented quilter, Janet Foy. I just love the colorful combinations, don’t you?

We have a Flickr photo group if you’d like to see and get inspired by other creations made with the fabric from all over the world. I especially love this cute dress made out of the dot fabric.

You can also find free patterns to download for making quilts out of the fabric on Andover Fabric’s website. Click on the images below for quick links to for pdfs of the quilt patterns.

We have a few new fabric designs just in stock this week from The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I think this one of the food the caterpillar eats through on Saturday is going to be very popular.

And there’s even more new fabric styles to come! Here’s a sneak peek at the new Grouchy Ladybug fabric coming out in August! We can’t wait.

We’d love to hear from all our crafty readers out there. Have you ever made a quilt? What would you make out of this cute Eric Carle fabric?
