Picture Book Puzzler: Knit One, Guess Who?

December 19th, 2011 by Eliza Eliza

With cold weather upon us and last minute holiday gifts on my crafting agenda, my mind is on one of my favorite winter pasttimes — knitting! I met with a book rep last week and after chatting about books, the conversation turned to a mutual love of yarn and knitting. She remarked that she’s noticed that a love of books and a love of knitting often go hand in hand. Have you noticed this too? So for this week’s puzzler, I’ve put together some favorite knitting images from picture books. I was hoping to find more images of boys and men knitting (too often deemed a little-old-lady realm, I think) so please chime in if you think of any others you don’t see here! As always, feel free to put your guesses in the comments below and help each other out! There are a few tricky ones in here, I’d say. I’ll be back at the end of the week with the answers. Stay warm!

What a fun challenge! As a knitter and teacher, I thought I’d know them all, but you’ve stumped me on #6 & 7. There is a fairly recent book called Knitting Nell, by Julie Jersild Roth. And don’t forget Shall I Knit You a Hat (A Christmas Yarn):-), by Kate Klise and illustrated by M. Sarah Klise, which is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for this today. I needed a kick-start, and this has me itching to finish my to-do-list so I can get to my knitting!

    1. Millions of Cats, by Wanda Gag
    2. The Mitten, by Jan Brett
    3. The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss
    4. The Odd Egg, by Emily Gravett
    5. Sophie’s Masterpiece, by Elaine Spinelli, illustrated by Jane Dyer (one of my all favorites!)
    6. I know I should know this, but can’t place it
    7. Very curious about this one!
    8. Goodnight Moon, by Margret Wise Brown
    9. Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll illustrations by John Tenniel
    10. The Three Little Kittens, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney

    Merry Christmas & Happy Knitting!
