Holiday Giveaway: Eric Carle Doodle

December 21st, 2012 by Eliza Eliza

It’s time for our last holiday giveaway! In celebration of The Carle’s 10th Anniversary, three wonderful artists have given us original doodles to share with our friends.  Two lucky readers have already won doodles by Peter Laird and Tony DiTerlizzi. This week we’re offering the opportunity to win a doodle by Eric Carle. The doodle is an original sketch, autographed on 9″ x 6″ heavy cardstock.

We love the Caterpillar! Do you have a favorite character from one of Eric Carle’s books?

Last month at our 10th Anniversary celebration, Eric Carle and his wife Barbara spoke to guests and friends about the journey of creating The Carle Museum and reflecting on 10 amazing years. They thank all the friends and supporters that have made this museum possible and the experience of visiting The Carle special. It’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet.

We had such a wonderful anniversary weekend last month and look forward to all the years full of fantastic events, exhibits and friends. Thank you again to Eric Carle, Peter Laird and Tony DiTerlizzi for all their support and for the hours they each spent doodling for fans. We are so grateful for the opportunity to give our blog readers the chance to win one of their pieces of art!

Since I’m always searching for my kitty, Milo, I must say Have You Seen My Cat? is my choice. :)

  2. Kristi Yee says:

I teach Kindergarten and all of Eric Carle’s characters are our favorites. But, my personal favorite is Little Cloud. I love the endless of possibilities of transformation and the independence of the Little Cloud from the other clouds.

  3. Peg Crowley says:

I love all of the books, however, the one that stands out the most is Brown Bear, brown bear. When my youngest daughter was born, six weeks early, I sung Brown Bear to her, in the NECU. once or twice daily she carries, both her brown bear stuff animal and book to me to read to her. At 18 months, this Christmas she received a doll, which she was cradling, in her rocking chair singing parts of brown bear. Both my daughters, by 12 months could point and identify the animals, on the last page.

I have so many favorites among the the Eric Carle characters, but if I have to choose it would be the caterpillar. Since that is how so many children have been introduced to Mr. Carle and even the museum has the iconic statue of a caterpillar, that will have to be my choice.

  9. Deanna says:

Hungry Caterpillar is my all time favorite. I gave my 8 month old grandson a gift bag full of Hungry Caterpillar gifts and books for his first Christmas and I even got a few things for myself!

  10. Jane says:

Oh the Hungry Caterpillar is our favorite. In fact, the story was performed this evening by Lexi, age 5, with the help of a Hello Kitty microphone…doesn’t get any better than that!

  11. Kristen Abood says:

All of Eric Carle’s characters are amazing! However, our favorite is the caterpillar! No matter how many books I read to my own children or the kids I teach… they all remember Eric Carle and his very hungry caterpillar!

  12. Tina says:

My son truly loves so many of Mr. Carle’s characters, it is hard to pick just one. But something so sweet has happened after reading My Apron, that I guess I would choose that book as my favorite. A few months ago, we read the book and my son was very interested in the fact that it was about Mr. Carle as a young boy. He seemed to identify with “Eric” and continues to want to be “a good helper like Eric.” I think it was the first time my son really understood that books are written by a person. Since then, he wants to make his own books (dictating the words to me, of course) and gets excited when we find an Eric Carle book that is new to us when we visit a library or bookstore. It’s so interesting to watch.

  13. Tina Cobuccio says:

My favorite Eric Carle character is the spider from the “The Very Busy Spider”.
The spider and the book remind me of the special times spent reading to my niece Ashley.

  14. Jennifer says:

As a preschool teacher and mother, I love all of Eric Carle’s books. Some of the ones that I love for my students and own kids are The Very Quiet Cricket, The Tiny Seed and numerous of his books to supplement our five senses unit. Wouldn’t go without them! My son’s first birthday party had a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme. His grandma just made him a beautiful quilt with the fabric/illustrations from Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

Eric Carle’s books are favorites around our house, slowly slowly said the sloth, heads to toes tells us yes we can as we do yoga to that book but our all time favorite is of course a pop from egg to become a very hungry caterpillar…and it all started with a blue horse. Love his work!

  16. Liz Williams says:

We just finished our Eric Carle unit at school focused on the elements of shape and color. Guest readers came into the class to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar in nine different languages. In every language the word butterfly is something unique. My favorite character of Eric Carle’s is the caterpillar for showing the world if you are given a supportive environment, you can develop into something truly beautiful and very unique! I think it’s probably true that Dr. Seuss gets a lot of credit for helping children learn how to read, but Eric Carle’s gift to children is to have them use their imaginations with the everyday things that they see and feel and know they are a treasured part of this beautiful world. Thank you Eric Carle for sharing with us your passion for a job you deeply love.

  17. Darrin says:

I think that it has to be the Sloth. I can relate to the idea of needing to go slower.
