Picture Book Puzzler: The Underdogs

Monday, July 11th, 2011

When he was here at The Carle, Tomi Ungerer mentioned that he liked to create books about animals which are normally hated, “just to show that everybody is different, but everyone has something.” Today, let’s hear it for the under-appreciated animals that rarely make appearances in children’s books because they might be considered too scary, too ugly or too unlikeable. The below artists bravely blazed past the option of books about fluffy bunnies and cute puppies to bring you books about spiders, rats and snakes, making our collection all that more complete. Below are 10 occasionally misunderstood animals. Can you name what book each is from? Good luck and I’ll see you back here on Friday for the answers!

Picture Book Puzzler: What’s in a name?

Monday, April 4th, 2011

What’s in a name? Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Would we still feel the same way about favorite characters like Winnie-the-Pooh and Corduroy if they different names? To me, a memorable character changes that name forever. So, let’s test your children’s book knowledge and see if you can name the book each of these famous characters belong to. Put your guesses in the comments below and, like always, check back on Friday for the answers. Good luck!

Picture Book Puzzler: Hello, My Name is….

Monday, October 4th, 2010

In our bookstore we get asked for books featuring a specific child’s name quite a bit.
“My granddaughter’s named is Olivia. Do you have any books about girls named Olivia?”
“Do you have any books with someone named Tommy in it?”

Sometimes suggestions come easy, but other times all of us booksellers have to huddle together to rack our brains. We end up walking up and down the shelves staring at the spines of books hoping something will jog our memory. Certain characters’ names definitely stick out better than others. Whey can’t more children be named Pinkerton or Elmer anyway?

So my friends, how well do you know your characters? I’ll give you a name of and you tell me what popular picture book they each come from.
