Book-Centered Programs for Youth & Families
Inspired by The Carle’s Whole Book Approach, these outreach programs support critical engagement with the picture book as an art form, engage the group in a collaborative experience, and place emphasis on reading with children rather than reading to children. For more program options, see our Art-Centered Programs.
After reading the information below regarding program options and fees, please complete our online Group Program Reservation Form with your selection. Book-Centered Programs are designed for between 10 and 25 participants, unless otherwise noted. To inquire about programs for larger audiences, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
A Book in Hand - Ages 2 – 4
This multiple copy storytime program is designed to engage children and their caregivers with the picture book as an art form. Participating children are provided with a copy of the book read by the storytime leader and are encouraged to refer to their own copies as the reading occurs. Sites may choose to purchase the copies for participants for an additional fee. Maximum of 16 participants.
The Whole Book Approach Visiting Storytimes - All Ages
Each session in your classroom or library includes readings of two or three picture books using The Carle’s Whole Book Approach. The session provides participants with picture book vocabulary so they can have the verbal tools necessary to talk about the parts of a book and how they function together to create an artistic whole. Songs and movement are integrated into the program when appropriate.
Teacher Consultation Fee $100
After working with students Museum staff will engage educators in a one-hour program designed to explore the theory and practice behind the Museum's Whole Book Approach and how it is applied in the program selected so that teachers can begin to implement such programming in their classrooms.
