Donation Guidelines for Our Libraries

The Carle is grateful to the many publishers and individuals who have donated books to our libraries. Because of limited space, we are now only able to accept a very limited number of books. The Reading Library accepts new and used picture books in brand new or like new condition. We consider picture books which have been published by major publishing houses, have garnered highly placed reviews, or have received major independent reviews. The Barbara Elleman Research Library (BERL) accepts for donation new and used professional and scholarly resources also in brand new or like new condition.

The Carle staff evaluates donations for acceptance into the collection by the same criteria for which materials are selected for purchase. Donated items, once approved, can be delivered or shipped to The Carle at the donor’s expense. The Carle is a non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. The Carle cannot appraise or place a dollar value on the items donated. A "Donated Goods Receipt Form" will be filled out by the donor and signed by a staff member for the donor's tax records. All gifts accessioned into the collections become the property of the The Carle, and may be deaccessioned according to the particular Libraries’ Collection Development Policy.

To review the scope of our collections, please return to Libraries. For donations please contact our library staff at 413-559-6326 or library@carlemuseum.org and provide a proposed donation list of items which include title, author, illustrator, publisher, and publication year.
