New VW Bug Release

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art Welcomes New Very Hungry Caterpillar VW Bug

(Amherst, MA –April 28, 2015) –There is a new caterpillar in town! After traveling through 19 states, visiting 16 book stores, and buzzing over 4,500 miles to promote Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, The Carle’s new Volkswagen Beetle pulled up to its new home in Amherst in March. A gift from Penguin Young Readers Group, “The Bug” will be a great attraction on-site and en route to outreach and afterschool programs.

“We are so delighted to have a new Bug to replace the previous Bug, which will retire after serving the Museum since our earliest days. The caterpillar car is a popular photo opportunity for guests and has been posted on social media throughout the world. Local friends can look forward to spotting The Bug out and about in the community for years to come,” said Alexandra Kennedy, The Carle’s executive director. “We are so grateful to the publishers at Penguin Young Readers Group for their generosity. They continue to be such wonderful supporters of our work here.”

Whalen Insurance Agency of Northampton, MA will generously provide insurance sponsorship of The Bug. Museum staff will use the new car for programs and outreach to schools, libraries, and other organizations throughout the Northeast to encourage a love of art and reading.

People are invited to “Spot The Bug” and enter a monthly raffle to win a free Museum pass when they see the Bug buzzing through town. Spotters can email the date, time and place they saw The Bug to info@carlemuseum.org
