Since its inception in 2002, The Carle has received more than 6,600 gifts of original picture-book art from generous collectors, artists, and artists’ families. It is our great honor to conserve, preserve, and exhibit this work. In total, our holdings include more than 13,000 illustrations.
Among the many works in our collection, The Carle has large holdings of Leo Lionni, William Steig, Petra Mathers, Arnold Lobel, Ashley Bryan, and Simms Taback. We also have important work by Arthur Rackham, Ludwig Bemelmans, Maurice Sendak, Margot Zemach, Rosemary Wells, Jerry Pinkney, Allen Say, Chris Van Allsburg, Garth Williams, Trina Schart Hyman, and many others. All of these artists, and many more, were included in our first major exhibition taken from our permanent collection, Iconic Images: Ten Years of Collecting for The Carle, which opened in November 2012.
In the coming years, The Carle aspires to digitize the collection and make it available online. We believe this will enable potential visitors and scholars to learn more about our holdings and encourage them to visit.
