Drawings from the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75
July 3 - November 1, 2009
In celebration of Tomie dePaola’s 75th birthday, The Carle is organizing a major retrospective of his career, Drawings from the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75. Curated by renowned authority of children’s literature and biographer of Tomie dePaola, Barbara Elleman, the exhibition will comprise works from his favorite books such as Strega Nona: An Original Tale, Bill and Pete to the Rescue, and Big Anthony and the Magic Ring as well as examples of his non-picture book art. Themes will include characters, personified animals, and heart motifs. The exhibition will explore the artist’s profound appreciation of design and art history to underscore his diverse talents.

Join us for an intimate Members' evening to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition Drawings from the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75. The event includes complimentary appetizers and drink ticket, a conversation between Tomie dePaola and guest curator Barbara Elleman, and the chance to win exhibition-related items in our free drawing. A program to benefit the Carle! Tomie dePaola will lead a small group on a tour of the exhibition, Drawings From the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75, to be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold for this special event.

1 PDP. Join your colleagues at the Museum for a special presentation by Tomie dePaola. Tour the dePaola exhibition, gather information on booking guided tours, explore resources on ways to enhance critical and creative thinking, and learn what’s happening at the Museum this Fall. Free materials for libraries and classrooms.
Light refreshments will be served.

4:30 - 5:30 pm Browse the Museum, enjoy refreshments in the Café, collect free materials for your classroom
5:30 - 6:30 Tomie dePaola presentation in the Auditorium
6:30 - 7:00 pm Tomie distributes bookplates; Museum Shop open; all other areas of Museum closed

Please note: Due to unforeseen health issues, Tomie dePaola has cancelled his tour for Strega Nona’s Harvest, but will still be attending all events scheduled at The Carle. The return of Tomie’s carpal tunnel syndrome required immediate surgery, and the recovery time is expected to be lengthy; therefore, in lieu of signing books Tomie will be handing out pre-printed signed bookplates while the bookplates last. Limit one book from home.

Hear from one of the most popular creators of children’s books as Tomie talks about his process and tells some of the stories behind his books. Known for his special way with color, line, detail, and design, he has been honing his skills since that day in kindergarten when he told his art teacher, “Real artists don’t copy!”
