Call for Caterpillars!
January 28 - May 31, 2013
Help us celebrate The Carle’s 10th anniversary year!
We invite friends, families, schools, and other organizations throughout the country and abroad to create 3-dimensional caterpillar sculptures out of found materials. Be inspired by Eric Carle’s most beloved character and transform ANY combination of recycled or found materials (plastic, paper, foam, wood, metal, etc.) into a 3-dimensional caterpillar sculpture.
Photographs of the caterpillar sculptures will be displayed at The Carle and on The Carle’s social media websites. Three entries will be chosen at random at the Museum’s Children’s Book Festival on June 8, 2013 and will receive an original doodle by Eric Carle!

Puppet Making and Performance

(Ages 9-12) Led by Director of Picture Book Theatre, Therese Brady Donohue, this five-day workshop will take students through the process of “from page to stage” using Eric Carle’s book Mister Seahorse. In the mornings, participants will create painted stick puppets and learn how to put on their own puppet show. In the afternoons, Museum Educators will lead activities in the Studio, Galleries and Reading Library. The finished puppet show will be performed in the Museum’s Auditorium on the last day.

Professional Development Workshop
An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies

(4 PDPs) Learn about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), the principles of which guide the educational programming at the Museum. Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine. Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.

Using Picture Books with Older Students

Morning Session: The Whole Book Approach
9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Discover the difference between reading with children and reading to children. This session will include a chance for participants to observe a storytime at The Carle to see the Whole Book Approach in action. Afterwards, the group will discuss their observations and explore how to evaluate the picture book as an art form with the goal of using this critical engagement with the picture book as a platform for interactive reading experiences.

Afternoon Session: Exploring Book Design
1:30 – 4:30 pm
Through bookmaking and other artistic activities, participants will experience how creative exploration can engage and inspire students to appreciate a book from cover to cover and further support their understanding of the key elements of picture book design and creation. (Ages 6-10) With each morning spent at the Museum exploring art and art-making and the afternoon spent at the Hampshire College Farm Center, students need only add their imagination to create a fun-filled day. Coordinated by The Carle’s Art Educators, Meghan Burch and Diana MacKenzie, the program is filled with a variety of activities and introductions to the various farm animals by trained Farm Education Collaborative staff who help the students experience the animals and their significance in everyday life.
