Picture Book Puzzler: For Pet's Sake

There's nothing quite like curling up with book. And, for a lot of us, there's noting quite like curling up with our pet. Sometimes, even, the pets in our books can feel just as comfortable and familiar as our very own. There are several tales from my childhood in which I can remember a pet that was as important to me as the story. One of my favorite books, Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger (1984, Penguin), tells the story of how the moon begins, each night, as a pearl on Grandfather Twilight's strand. READ MORE

Stuck in the Mud!

Sometimes in early spring we can feel a little stuck. We want it to be sunny and warm but things aren't quite happening as quickly as we like. Or maybe, with all the rain and melting snow, we are quite literally stuck in the mud! Getting stuck in the mud is a pretty common theme in picture books. Often the scenario is the same, a bunch of animals pile into a truck, barrel down a muddy road and...you guessed it...get stuck.
