Summer 2013 Employee Picks

Summer is the perfect season for reading! It?s also the perfect season for enjoying the outdoors, adventuring and the wonderful world of make believe. My personal favorite activity is the ?book-nic.? It?s as simple as it sounds: pack up a picnic lunch, a blanket and a book (or books!) and spend the afternoon outside, reading. Here in the shop, we?ve all picked out our current favorite summer read. From appreciating nature, to stretching our imaginations, to adventures grand and small, these books all speak the language of summer. READ MORE

Too Bad, Ants! (A Halloween Unmasking)

It’s Halloween the day after tomorrow, that most perplexing of holidays, when everybody nice and safe puts on the mask of danger and death, and everyone laughs in the face of the very scariest things. READ MORE

A Children's Book-a-Day Does the Body Good

Anita Silvey certainly wears many hats (pun intended, for those who know of Anita's fondness for hats!) and this writer/teacher/editor/reviewer is at it again. The former Houghton Mifflin publisher and Horn Book editor has a new project up her sleeve and, oh boy, is it big! READ MORE

How Can I Get My Book Into Your Store -- Part Two

It's hard to convince a bookstore to sell your book. Back in 1993 an editor I know was in Chicago for a sales meeting, and stopped by my store---The Children's Bookstore---with her marketing director. We went out to lunch. The editor and her marketing director had visited the B&N branch on the Upper West Side of New York City, and surreptitiously placed several books they had published right onto the B&N shelves. Poetry: The Other Baby Gift

Surrounded by picture storybooks and chewable board books, poetry anthologies can go overlooked. That's why I recommend poetry to gift-givers who hope to avoid giving a book the young family may already own. READ MORE

How Can I Get My Book Into Your Store? -- Part One

“Do you have any books about Charles Darwin?” the anxious customer inquired. “Yes,” I answered, “I have one by Peter Sis, one illustrated by Mary Azarian….” I realized that I wasn’t responding the way she wanted me to. READ MORE

My Fairy Tale Life, By Lisbeth Zwerger

A few hours ago Lisbeth Zwerger walked into the The Carle and I told her the fairy tale story of why she is responsible for me being here, running The Carle’s bookshop.  She was surprised, because we had never met before! READ MORE

Holiday Hand-Selling

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Hand-selling book time! I’ve noticed that the holiday shopping season brings more people asking for opinions and recommendations on books than any other time of the year.  And opinions and recommendations I’ve got!  It’s the time of year where people are kind enough to buy books for children of friends and far-away relatives. Not knowing these children very well, more often than not, customers need helping picking out the perfect gift. READ MORE
