Weave, Fold, Thread, Tie!

This week, we explored ways to attach materials together without using adhesives. We experimented with weaving, folding, threading, and tying to create our art. Working without glue or tape can sometimes take a bit more problem-solving and time, but it can also lead to creative solutions, as well as interesting patterns, shapes, and textures. Reflect, Refract, Reimagine!

This week in our At Home Art Studios, we were inspired to explore materials and how they interact with light. Sourcing materials from around the home, we noticed that some let the light through, others block light, and some materials even bounce light around. When held up to a light source, the appearance of the materials changed, and the view of the world around us was transformed. Pop-Ups and Paper Construction

This week, we invite our At Home Art Studio community to explore pop-ups! Using paper and a pair of scissors, you can create images that leap off the page and surprise the viewer. Much like lift-flaps and cut-outs, we often return to pop-ups in the Art Studio as a way to encourage storytelling and make art that is interactive. Tear, Rip, Shred, Create!

This week, we invite our At Home Art Studio community to experience tearing, ripping, and shredding paper as a creative process. At the museum, we often observe how our youngest visitors are interested in thoroughly exploring materials and their properties. They notice how paper sounds when it is crumpled, how it floats when tossed in the air, and how it feels as it is pulled apart. All of these observations about paper help us discover what makes it an interesting material to use for art making. READ MORE
