Picture Books We Love

Planting a Community: Gardening Books

Whether it’s a plot in the community garden, magical topiaries in the neighborhood or even the imaginary gardens we share with family, growing and tending plants together unites us all. The Carle Bookshop booksellers share their recommendations for picture books that celebrate growing and planting.

What Will These Hands Make?

With so much time spent in our homes right now, it’s the perfect time to explore what we can make ourselves! Nikki McClure’s newest picture book, What Will These Hands Make? , inspires us to celebrate how things are made and the community of talented people who make them.

Women Weavers

The Carle Bookshop reviews picture books that feature weaving. Two picture book biographies and one out of print favorite, these books are all lyrical, sumptuous homages to the craft of weaving, celebrating an often overlooked craft that is both artistic and practical. The bookshop staff also shares some of their own weaving projects!

A Velocity of Readers

Sara reviews A Velocity of Being: Letters to a Young Reader edited by Maria Popova and Claudia Bedrick (Enchanted Lion, 2018), a delightful collection of letters by writers, philosophers, scientists and more, each paired with a gorgeous illustration by a contemporary illustrator, many of which will be very familiar to picture book lovers! The letters are addressed to anyone who has ever found solace in a book, each writer expounding on what reading is and has meant to them in their lives. Funny, thoughtful, poignant, these letters and illustrations are a sumptuous treat for all the readers and letter writers among us!
