At The Carle: The Very Hungry Caterpillar's Birthday!

March 20th is The Very Hungry Caterpillar's birthday! We're celebrating all weekend at The Carle. In the Shop we're having a store-wide sale both Saturday, March 19th and Sunday, March 20th. All books and toys will be 15% off (30% if you're a member) so there's a reason to party right there!

A life-size birthday cake for Very Hungry Caterpillar Day!

On Saturday, March 19th we welcome the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Big Read for Young Readers to The Carle for full day of programming for authors and illustrators. The New England Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will present a panel of four veteran authors and author-illustrators as they explore why they write, the challenges they face, and how their writing experiences have changed them. The “BIG READ for Young Readers” event this year looks at the power of telling our stories. Here's the fabulous panel they have lined up for the day, who will be signing their books after the event: Jo Knowles, is the author of author of Lessons from a Dead Girl and Jumping Off Swings. She teaches writing for children in the MFA program at Simmons College and speaking as one of Jo's past students, she is one of the BEST writing teachers. Not only is she inspirational and super encouraging, she's also one the sweetest people I've met. Jo's awards include the PEN New England Discovery Award, YALSA Best Books for Young Adults and Quick Picks Top Ten. Mary Newell DePalma has illustrated twenty picture books and is the author of five, including A Grand Old Tree, an IRA/CBC Children's Choice in 2006. Brian Lies is the award-winning author-illustrator of more than twenty picture books, including the New York Times bestsellers Bats at the Beach and Bats at the Library, and his recent Bats at the Ballgame. Barbara O'Connor has written seven middle grade novels, including The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester and How to Steal a Dog. Her numerous awards include ALA Notables, Parents Choice Gold and Silver, Massachusetts Book Award, and several state children's choice awards. For information about registration (seats are limited!) click here. Then, Sunday March 20th is Very Hungry Caterpillar Day! We have a whole day planned around our favorite picture book friend. There will be special storytimes in our Reading Library, films in our Auditorium, art activities in our Art Studio, a sale in our Shop and if you're lucky, maybe you'll get a special visit from the birthday caterpillar himself! Check back tomorrow here on the blog for a special giveaway that will help one lucky reader celebrate the special day in style! Hope to see you all this weekend at The Carle!
