Review: Your Mind is Like the Sky

Your Mind is Like the Sky by Bronwen Ballard and Laura Carlin (Frances Lincoln Children's Books, 2019)

This beautiful picture book uses soft colored pencil, chalk pastel and water based paints to depict feelings that humans of all ages struggle with and seek to banish. Using the metaphor of the sky with its rain clouds and clear skies, the author (a coach and psychologist) uses simple language to give structure and meaning to the way our brains handle emotions. The expressive yet nameless main character demonstrates how futile it is to fight these rain cloud thoughts that can threaten to take over everything and another way to handle them is shown. In the back of the book are useful notes that expand on the theme of mindfulness. This book has value for readers of all ages who have ever struggled with a rain cloud feeling.
