March 18 - April 22, 2014
Tuesdays, 5:00 - 8:00 pm
(2 graduate credits)
Starting March 18, Simmons College Instructor Megan Lambert will teach A Whole Book Approach, a graduate-level course now open to non-degree students. Students will devote their studies to the popular interactive storytime model Lambert developed when she was on staff at The Carle. This course, part of Simmons' ongoing Graduate Study in Children's Literature program at The Carle, will run on Tuesdays from 5 to 8pm through April 22 at the Museum in Amherst.
This course is ideal for anyone interested in the picture book as an art form, including teachers, librarians, and anyone interested in creating picture books or reading them with children.  Students will critically engage with the design and production elements of a broad range of contemporary picture books. Structuralist, Reader Response, and other approaches will be used to examine how words, pictures, and design work together to affect a reader's experience. The course will include opportunities for students to observe Whole Book Approach storytimes, witnessing firsthand how children respond in facilitated readings.
