Dear Friend,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    DONATE
We just received a thank you letter from Jennifer Reese, a teacher who recently attended a lecture here with David Wiesner, the only living artist who’s been awarded three Caldecott Medals. He talked to a rapt audience about the art and stories that have inspired and sustained him since he was a boy. I loved her closing line:

“Everything The Carle does has a touch of magic about it.”

Because you’ve been a part of The Carle, I especially hope that you agree with Jennifer. I know I do. But where does that magic come from? It’s the staff, of course, who works so hard to make The Carle inviting and creative. And it’s the exhibitions, the stories, and the picture books themselves that stir the imagination and help us better understand ourselves and the world around us. But it’s more than that, too.

Like David, we are all seeking inspiration—from art and stories, and from each other. At The Carle, we connect people to those who came before them: the generations of artists who were brave enough to put their work out into the world, the writers who faced a blank page and said something in their own unique way. Their truths resonate, and that’s magic.

When we feel those connections, we are uplifted. We want to share our experience with our children, our families, our students, our friends. We want to return to the place that brings us joy. And when we can’t return—when we can’t literally come together at The Carle—we return in our hearts and in our memories, and the connection stays.

As we begin our celebration of The Carle’s 15th anniversary, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all of the artists and authors who have helped us make The Carle magical, who have shared their stories and creativity, and helped us bring joy to nearly a million visitors. None of that would have been possible without the financial support of donors and friends like you.

I hope you will join me this season by making a generous donation, an investment in bringing more magic to more people like Jennifer. The annual fund is the most important financial support for us to secure each year—donations that are “unrestricted,” allowing us to apply them where we need them most. You can donate here or call Rebecca Miller Goggins at 413-559-6308.

I hope you enjoy this illustration by one of my favorite artists, Antonio Frasconi, pioneer of the bilingual picture book and a generous donor to our permanent collection—a beautiful way for us to share some of the magic of The Carle.

With gratitude, and wishing you and yours all the best this giving season,
