DIY Drying Rack For Art Supplies

Sarah Johnston

Art makers know that many art projects can be messy and leave you with quite a pile of dirty dishes to clean up.  In The Studio we often need to wash and dry a variety of tools and materials after they have been used for art making.  Because we do this so often it was important to have a space that is always ready for stacking cups, wet brushes, or other supplies.  We found that using a cookie cooling rack is great for this purpose!

A drying rack made from a lid and a cookie drying sheet, with two brushes and two cups sitting on top drying.

To catch any water that drips off the supplies as they dry we put the lid of a plastic bin underneath the wire rack.  We use a 10” x 16” cookie cooling rack, but any size rack would work if you can find a tray to fit underneath that is the same size or larger. Since we use many bins of different sizes for storage, we always have plenty of extra lids to use for this purpose.  But you could use any other type of lid or tray to catch the water drips at home or in your classroom.

What sorts of creative ways do you use to dry your art supplies at home or in a classroom?
