Pop-ups and Palettes: The Many Dimensions of Robert Sabuda

December 18, 2004 - May 1, 2005
Central Gallery

Robert Sabuda is a modern master of pop-up picture books. Whether original creations for The Twelve Days of Christmas or evocations of John Tenniel’s drawings for Alice in Wonderland, his work is always beautiful and ingeniously engineered. But Sabuda’s talents are not confined to three-dimensional wizardry. Blizzard’s Robe, a story of winter in the Arctic, was done in batik, a centuries-old technique, and Paper Dragon was comprised of elaborately cut paper. Each book is represented by preliminary studies and the published art.
