The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art: Recent Acquisitions

Since its inception, The Carle has received numerous gifts of original art. We are extremely gratified by the generous response of collectors, artists, and artists’ families to help the Museum build a first-rate collection. This selection covers a broad spectrum. It includes historic works from the late 19th – and early 20th centuries by Arthur Rackham, Lothar Meggendorfer, and Theo van Hoytema. In addition, we present a selection of works donated by practicing artists that include Steven Kellogg, Barry Moser, Jane Dyer, Petra Mathers, Kathryn Brown, Gennady Spirin, Wendell Minor, Tomie de Paola, and Rosemary Wells. As well, we are pleased to show work by Leo Lionni from the three books his family recently donated. We are delighted these artists have responded so enthusiastically to what The Carle stands for. They have been motivated by the extraordinary facility that Eric and his wife Bobbie have established to honor the art of the picture book.
