Exploring Project Cycles through Materials Play

In the Art Studio, we like to think about project cycles or how one experience can lead into the next. For one of the Materials Play programs this fall (a quarterly program series focused on the interests of toddlers and their caregivers), I considered how we could involve participants in the life-cycle of a painted paper display. Setting a Space for Inspiration: Materials Play

In planning for the Materials Play Program, we specifically design art experiences with our toddler guests, and their caregivers, in mind. In the past two quarterly sessions, I have been really interested in continuing our thoughts about setting a space for inspiration by re-imagining the back part of our Art Studio for whole body exploration. In other words, I wanted each art experience to be immersive, focusing on limited materials, and tailored to toddler interests. Below is a round-up of the past sessions, I hope it inspires you to re-imagine your spaces based upon your art-maker’s interests! READ MORE

Music, Motion, and Marks: Oil Pastels and Long Paintbrushes

On one of our Friday morning sessions of Materials Play this year, we offered a two-phase invitation to create. At our low table, toddlers and preschoolers experimented with chubby oil pastels on large white pieces of paper. Rigid Foam Construction

This activity is great for developing imagination as well as the small muscles of the hands.

Here are some of the things I gather and put into clear containers to prepare for this construction experiment: READ MORE

Toddler Art Activity: Flour Paint Experiment

Materials Play is a space and time for toddlers and their parent or caregiver to have fun in the Art Studio with materials and explorations selected especially for them. Sometimes messy, always open-ended and experimental, the 4-week series occur about once a season. I kicked off the latest Materials Play series with an exploration that was as much science experiment as it was art-making. READ MORE

Printing with Toy Trucks

Here's a peek at one of techniques we use in the Art Studio to make visually textured marks on papers that we use for Eric Carle-inspired collages.

To start, put a little water-based paint (such as tempera) on a tray or plastic plate, roll a toy truck through it, then "drive" it on paper of your choice. For making collage papers, we like using tracing paper, Folia Transparent Paper, lightweight drawing paper or construction paper. READ MORE
