Toddler Art Activity: Flour Paint Experiment

Materials Play is a space and time for toddlers and their parent or caregiver to have fun in the Art Studio with materials and explorations selected especially for them. Sometimes messy, always open-ended and experimental, the 4-week series occur about once a season. I kicked off the latest Materials Play series with an exploration that was as much science experiment as it was art-making. READ MORE

The Art Studio's Favorite Materials

One of the best things about my job is trying out new art materials. There’s nothing like opening up a fresh box of something colorful, taking in its distinct scent, and dragging it across a piece of paper for the first time. I feel like a scientist, getting ready to embark upon a series of experiments with my students.  How will they test the limits of the material? Will they enjoy its smell and texture as much as I do? While I've been out for most of our last Friday morning Materials Play for Toddlers series in the Studio, I wanted to share what materials were explored in a few of the sessions. READ MORE

Veggie Printing

Aiyi, one of our recent interns, hosted a special Studio activity exploring prints made with fruits and vegetables. Together, we sat down to write about how it went from her point of view. READ MORE

Rainbow Window Shades - Easy Way to Display Art

Our Art Studio is blessed with an entire wall of windows on our South-facing side. That means, in the months of short days, the sun's glorious rays stream right in...to our eyes. That kind of direct light is great for feeling like a cat- relaxed and drowsy, but is sometimes tricky for working.

Printing with Toy Trucks

Here's a peek at one of techniques we use in the Art Studio to make visually textured marks on papers that we use for Eric Carle-inspired collages.

To start, put a little water-based paint (such as tempera) on a tray or plastic plate, roll a toy truck through it, then "drive" it on paper of your choice. For making collage papers, we like using tracing paper, Folia Transparent Paper, lightweight drawing paper or construction paper. READ MORE
