Carle Honors 2010

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Tonight is Carle Honors 2010 in New York City and that means it’s your last chance to scope out the beautiful artwork on auction before the bidding begins. I still can’t decide if my favorite is this ocean scene by G. Brian Karas:

or these amazing owls by Denise Fleming:

Not to mention all the other original pieces by Caldecott winning illustrators keeping them company! Jerry Pinkney, Uri Shulevitz, Beth Krommes, David Macaulay, Leo & Diane Dillon…need I go on?  How much do you love this school of fish by Jerry Pinkney?

Click here to view all the artists and artwork featured this year.

And don’t forget, in addition to this amazing auction, The Carle Honors 2010 poster designed and signed by Eric Carle will go on sale after September 30th. Even if you can’t make it to The Carle Honors this year, you can still order a commemorative poster online. Click here to pre-order your signed poster or buy last year’s poster designed and signed by Mo Willems.

Carle Honors 2010

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

It’s getting to be that time of year again…The annual Carle Honors! This year we’re again honoring some of the most amazing people in the children’s book industry.

The 2010 Artist award goes to Caldecott-winning author and illustrator David Macaulay.

The 2010 Angel award goes to noted art collectors and longtime supporters of The Carle, Allan & Kendra Daniel.

The 2010 Bridge award goes to renowned sculpter, Nancy Schön, who is the creator behind the beloved Make Way for Ducklings sculpture in Boston Public Garden among many others.

The 2010 Mentor award goes to Stephen Mooser & Lin Oliver, the president and executive director of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

The Carle Honors will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 30th at Guastavino’s in New York City. Information about tickets can be found on our website here.

This year’s commemorative poster has been created by Eric Carle, himself. The poster will be on sale at The Carle Honors, but we’ll also be selling it online for those unable to attend. All posters will be signed by Eric Carle and are available now for pre-order here.

In addition to the award festivities, there will also a silent art auction of original work by an amazing list of children’s book illustrators.  This beautiful ocean scene by G. Brian Karas is one of my favorites! Click here to view all of the art pieces for auction and pick your favorites. The original pieces will also be available for viewing at Books of Wonder in New York City until the day of the auction. For more information about the auction and bidding, click here.

Then on Saturday, we have the event that fans wait ALL YEAR to arrive:

Meet Eric Carle Book Signing: Saturday, August 14th at 10:00 am (9:00 am for Members)

It’s the one time a year to come to the Museum and meet Eric Carle and get a signed book (or three!) to take home and cherish or to give to a very lucky friend. We know it’s hard to stop at 3 books, but we don’t want Eric’s poor hand to fall off – so we’re giving away signed bookplates for any hardcover books purchased that you can’t get signed by Eric, himself.

What’s a bookplate, you ask?  Bookplates are special stickers to put in the front of the book (either on the inside cover or title page) and each one has been designed and signed personally by Eric for our store. Isn’t it cute?

This weekend is so exciting because it’s a chance for all of us here at the Museum to not only see Eric (we’ve missed him ever since he’s moved away from our Happy Valley!) but also to meet all of his amazing fans! Past Eric Carle book signings have brought us people from all over the country making road trip pilgrimages to meet Eric in this special space he created: The Eric Carle Museum. Last year I remember meeting a woman covered in Eric Carle tattoos and a sweet couple who trekked all the way from The Caribbean! I hope this is the year we get to meet you!

We know for some of you a trip to the Museum is just not in the cards right now, but we’d hate for you to miss out on all the excitement of a signed book. While you won’t be able to meet Eric this time, if you buy a hardcover Eric Carle book from our bookstore, we’ll ship it to you after the event with one of the special signed bookplates – just remember to use the COUPON CODE: BOOKPLATE at checkout. We only have a few so we’re limiting this offer to only 2 per person until August 31st or while supplies last. Click here to see all of Eric Carle’s wonderful books.

So get ready for a couple of really exciting days ahead and we hope to see you all there!
