Very Silly Caterpillars

Every year in March we celebrate Very Hungry Caterpillar Day with a fun caterpillar-themed activity in The Studio. This year guests made very silly caterpillars with tons of colorful found materials glued to cardboard bases.

We had the materials on a large table setup like a buffet and guests collected what they wanted to use.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Mobile Tutorial

Here in The Studio we often use tissue paper for a variety of creative projects because it is accessible for so many ages, and it connects so well with Eric Carle?s artwork. When looking at all the collage illustrations by Eric Carle we are always so amazed at how versatile the simple materials that he uses really are. The textures and delicate shapes that he can achieve with such a fragile paper are quite surprising and there is something so magical and eye-catching about the crisp bold shapes and colors in his works of art. Call For Caterpillars Are On Display!

To celebrate The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art?s 10th anniversary year this year, we welcomed friends, families, schools, and other organizations throughout the country and abroad to create 3-dimensional caterpillar sculptures out of found materials. Photographs of the caterpillar sculptures are currently on display in the windows of The Art Studio on sheets of transparent vellum in document sleeves and connected together with 1" book rings. In honor of The Very Hungry Caterpillar day on March 20, 2011, Penguin Young Readers Group and Canson invited classes to celebrate spring by reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and creating posters inspired by it.
