Picture Books We Love

A Velocity of Readers

Sara reviews A Velocity of Being: Letters to a Young Reader edited by Maria Popova and Claudia Bedrick (Enchanted Lion, 2018), a delightful collection of letters by writers, philosophers, scientists and more, each paired with a gorgeous illustration by a contemporary illustrator, many of which will be very familiar to picture book lovers! The letters are addressed to anyone who has ever found solace in a book, each writer expounding on what reading is and has meant to them in their lives. Funny, thoughtful, poignant, these letters and illustrations are a sumptuous treat for all the readers and letter writers among us!

A Letter of Friendship and Hope

In celebration of Arnold Lobel’s upcoming birthday next week and this week’s Letter theme, the Carle Bookshop shares a favorite Frog and Toad story about mail, friendship and hope - all things we sure can use right now!

Literary Letters

A real letter written on paper with a pen or pencil (or even illustrated!) seems like a thing of the past, but that feeling of getting a note of love in the mail is unlike any other! Sharing our lives with others by writing down daily snippets or full length 'marathon letters' that take pages and pages, and sending it through the mail is a practice that the characters in these books use to great results and one that we all might consider adding to our lives as well. Inspired by the #AtHomeArtStudio's postal art this week, the booksellers from The Carle Bookshop are sharing a few of their favorite picture books about letter-writing.

Read, Share, Dream: A Tribute to Yuyi Morales' Dreamers

This week we’re celebrating Children's Book Week and Mother’s Day with Dreamers by Yuyi Morales, a beautiful book that pays tribute to mothers who always seek out the best for their families, and to all the dreamers who find comfort and inspiration in books during unfamiliar or difficult times.
