Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children’s Books

This exhibition features over 80 original illustrations for children’s books, drawn from the collection of Les and Zora Charles. Selections include examples from Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, although most of the exhibition focuses on the post-World War II period. Artists on view include: Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji, 1981); Kinuko Y. Craft (Cinderella, 2000); Maurice Sendak (The Bee-Man of Orn, 1964); Leo and Diane Dillon (Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, 1975); Trina Schart Hyman (Little Red Riding Hood, 1983); Gerald McDermott (Arrow to the Sun, 1974); Barry Moser (Jump On Over, 1989); and Jerry Pinkney (John Henry, 1994). 

Curated by Lolly Robinson. The exhibition was co-organized with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
